Girl Scout Cookie Program to begin Jan. 15

Girl Scout Cookie Program to begin Jan. 15 thumbnail

Westmoreland, N.Y. – Girl Scout Cadette Troop 21 in Westmoreland would rather give to others then to themselves.

A few years ago the troop donated the money to one of their friends’ families – a family devastated by a house fire that killed their friends’ younger sister. Most recently, the girls have taken their cookie profits and bought beads and supplies to make Breast Cancer Awareness Ribbons that are then distributed during the Breast Cancer Awareness Walk in October.

“You have to show kids at a young age how to be helpful and caring,” troop facilitator Brenda Spencer said. “We just try to set a good example.”

In addition to helping out friends and being involved in community service projects, the Girl Scout Cookie Program teaches girls valuable business, marketing and public speaking skills; team cooperation; problem-solving and goal setting. The money earned during the program helps each troop or group achieve its program goals for the year.

This cookie season Girl Scouts across the country will be inspiring change with the Cookie Program theme, “…Inspired by U.”  Girls will be taking orders for cookies beginning January 15. Direct booth sales will begin March 8. Cookies are $3.50 per box. The varieties available this year are Thin Mints, Tagalongs, Samoas; Do-Si-Dos; Trefoils; Lemon Chalet Cremes; Dulce De Leche; and new the year Thank You Berry Munch, a cookie with real cranberries and white fudge chips.
