Verona Man Dies in Madison County Crash thumbnail

(Clockville, NY - September 18, 2009) – Oneida-based state police are currently investigating a fatal car / dump truck collision which occurred around 12:51 p.m. this afternoon on Oxbow Road south of Cottons Road in the Town of Lincoln in Madison County.

A 2006 Sterling dump truck owned by Lanz Construction of Vernon Center and loaded with approximately 22 tons of crushed stone was northbound on Oxbow Road descending a steep incline on a curve when a southbound 2006 Hyundai Elantra operated by Kenneth T. Murphy, age 36, of Old Oneida Road in Verona crossed into the northbound lane while ascending the hill and was struck on its drivers side.

The collision caused the dump truck to overturn onto its passenger side and slide through a guiderail and over an embankment off the west side of the roadway.

The operator of the truck, Michael J. Thurston, age 45, of Vernon Center, was treated at the scene for a leg injury.

Murphy was extricated from his vehicle by members of the Lincoln Fire Department and transported to Oneida Healthcare Center by Greater Lenox Ambulance, where he was pronounced deceased. Members of the Madison County Sheriff’s Department and Village of Canastota Police responded to assist at the scene.

The investigation is continuing by members of the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Collision Reconstruction Unit and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit.  The weather was rainy and the roadway surface was wet at the time of the crash.
