(Utica, NY) Mohawk Valley Community College women’s cross country team is picking up the pace for another shot at a national title behind the performance of Hannah Hoffman (Rome/Rome Free Academy) who was named the NJCAA’s Region III Athlete of the Week.
Hoffman was the individual champion at the SUNY Cobleskill Cross Country Invitational last week which also earned her MVCC’s Athlete of the Week honor. Her time of 18 minutes, 41 seconds was the fastest in the NJCAA Region III this year. There were 111 runners from 12 colleges taking part in the event.
MVCC placed second in the team scoring as Cassie White (Whitesboro/Whitesboro High) finished in tenth place in a time of 20:02. The Hawks are 20-1 on the season.
This was MVCC’s second competition of the season having won the SUNY IT Invitational as Hoffman placed first in 21:04 and White placed second in her first ever cross country race. The Hawks won the event with 18 points.
Men’s Cross Country
At the SUNY IT Invitational, MVCC won team honors with 15 points as the Hawks placed five runners in the top 10 being led by Todd Butters (Rome/Rome Free Academy) in second place with a time of 20:32. Vinnie Savastano (Syracuse/Westhill High) was third in 20:58 as Garrett Parker (Whitesboro/Whitesboro High) placed fifth in 21:24, Rob Culver (Auburn/Auburn High) was seventh in 21:33 and Joe Arbogast (Stittville/Holland Patent High) was tenth in 21:56.
At SUNY Cobleskill, the Hawks placed fourth out of 12 teams as Savastano placed ninth in 28:50 with Butters in tenth with 28:53.
Women’s Soccer
The Hawks are off to a strong start this season with a 6-1 record after defeating Finger Lakes CC, 1-0, and Cayuga CC, 5-0, during this week’s action. Against Finger Lakes, Jackie Welch (Rome/Rome Free Academy) scored off an assist by Carley Young (Rome/Rome Free Academy). Goalie Caitlyn Smith (Madison/Madison High) made 10 Saves.
In the victory over Cayuga, Veronica Metz (Morrisville/Morrisville-Eaton Central) scored twice along with one assist while Nicole DiNitto (Marcy/Oriskany Central), Kirstie Gorgas (Whitesboro/Whitesboro High), and Welch each had one goal.
Women’s Volleyball
Kaitlyn DeLette (Whitesboro/Whitesboro High) was a real killer for the Hawks against Herkimer CCC, but it wasn’t enough as MVCC fell 3-0 with scores of 24-26, 20-25, 12-25. DeLette finished the evening with eight kills to go with her seven digs. Erin Cook (Camden/Camden High) finished with three kills and 11 digs as MVCC slips to 2-3.
Men’s Soccer
Finger Lakes CC was no match for the undefeated Region III Hawks as MVCC rattled off a 5-1 victory after taking a 3-0 edge in the first half this week. The first half goals were scored by Alex Brombacher (Clinton/Clinton High), Allan Bown (Marathon/Marathon Central), and Christophe Mandengue (Seine St. Denis/France).
Helping to raise MVCC’s record to 4-0 in Region III and 4-2 overall were Sejad Gromilic (New York Mills/Proctor High) and Sebastian Smith (Huntington Station/Walt Whitman High) with one goal each in the second half. Goalkeeper Shane Sullivan (Sherrill/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High) had one save while Emmanuel Allen (Staten Island/Curtis High) stopped two shots.
The Hawks also defeated Cayuga CC 1-0 this past weekend with Dan Cain (Marcy/Whitesboro High) scoring off a pass from Eric Gofgosky (Marathon/Marathon High). Sullivan stopped five shots for the shutout.
