Assemblyman David Townsend (R,WF-Sylvan Beach) welcomed Sheriff’s Week in New York State. The event, running from October 18 to 24, is meant to spotlight the contributions this constitutionally sanctioned office has made to law enforcement in the Empire State.
The Office of Sheriff was provided for in the state’s first constitution in 1777 and has existed on the county level in its role as “Keeper of the Peace” ever since. As an elected official, each county’s sheriff is also accountable to taxpayers as a representative, maintaining jails, offering security for county buildings including courthouses, and operating civil bureaus.
“As a former deputy sheriff, I have special regard for the unique role of the Office of Sheriff in our state,” said Townsend. “I applaud the arrival of Sheriff’s Week as I join residents of the Empire State in acknowledging the many law-enforcement contributions sheriffs have provided to New Yorkers throughout the years. Thanks to the Office of Sheriff New York is the safest large state in the country.”
