Legislative majority gets long weekend, taxpayers get shaft
(Nov. 21, 2009) Assemblyman David Townsend (R,WF-Sylvan Beach) joined with his Republican colleagues to criticize the majority leadership in the New York State Legislature for its inability to reduce a crushing $3.2 billion budget deficit despite two weeks of sessions in which inaction and petty politics have consistently undermined progress. Governor Paterson responded to this stubbornness by forcing the legislature to recess until the afternoon of Monday, November 23.
“Governor Paterson’s favorite legislators may have escaped back to their districts in New York City for a three-day weekend,” said Townsend. “But the hard-working taxpayers of Central New York continue to pay for this arrogance. Our $3.2 billion budget deficit demands immediate action. My colleagues and I have already submitted a plan to the majority which would cut the size of state government, reduce our outstanding debts, and create a path of fiscal sustainability for the future. I urge the governor and the legislative majority to return immediately to Albany and fulfill their duties as public servants.”
