Assemblyman David Townsend (R,WF-Sylvan Beach) today reminded Central New York commuters and other motorists about the statewide texting-while-driving ban going into effect on November 1. The law carries a fine up to $150 for drivers using handheld devices such as BlackBerrys or cell phones to send messages. Texting while driving has been shown to pose serious, and sometimes fatal, distractions to drivers of all ages.
“The November 1 texting ban means safer roads and less distracted drivers,” said Townsend. “Everyone agrees using PDAs, Blackberrys or cell phones while driving is a recipe for disaster. After this weekend, those who threaten their own safety and the well-being of fellow motorists will face stiff penalties. Speaking as a former law-enforcement official, education is the best tool in the Empire State’s fight against distracted driving. If you’re with a driver who tries to text, tell them the truth – if you click it, expect a ticket.”
