Clinton, N.Y. — The Hamilton College Theatre Department is hosting three lectures in a series called “Art and the Stage: Design for the Theatre.” They will all take place in Minor Theater on the Hamilton campus and are free and open to the public.
The first event is a lecture/demonstration of scene painting techniques with Michelle Bonker on Thursday, Oct. 22, at 4:10 p.m. Bonker received a bachelor’s degree in theatre with a concentration in technical theatre from Nazareth College. She then went on to Cobalt Studios in White Lake, N.Y., where she trained in painting techniques for theatre, film, TV, and faux finishing.
Bonker has painted a number of shows over the years for many companies and schools. Most recently she was the charge artist for the 2009 summer season for Stages St. Louis. She also has worked on pieces for the National Tour of Bye Bye Birdie, and Harvard University’s 2008 and 2009 Hasty Pudding Theatrical productions of Fable Attractions and Acropolis Now. She also worked at Shenandoah Summer Music Theatre from 2005-08.
The second event in the series will be “Fashion and Costume: John Galliano and The Learned Ladies” with Amy Petta on Thursday, Oct. 29, at 4:10 p.m., and the final is “Visual Storytelling: Stage Design” with Michael Riha on Tuesday, Nov. 3. These artists are all involved in Hamilton’s fall student theatre production, Moliere’s The Learned Ladies, opening Nov 5.
