Newly formed group plans several performances
(Oneida) The Holy Cross Academy Select Choir sang the National Anthem at the Carrier Dome Jan. 13, prior to the Syracuse Women’s basketball game vs. Rutgers.
HCA musical director Scott Rutledge wrote the arrangement of the “The Star Spangled Banner” for the 10-person choir. The choir auditioned in early September along with dozens of other singers and groups for the privilege of singing the National Anthem at a Syracuse game.
“It really is an honor for a variety of reasons,” Rutledge said. “When you hear these kids, the hair will stand up on the back of your neck. They are an exciting group of talented musicians. We feel truly blessed to be a small part of Syracuse’s winning tradition, and to share our deep pride in our country all at the same time. It really was an awesome experience. We can’t wait to do it again.”
Syracuse defeated Rutgers 79-66.
“So far the Orange are 1-0 when HCA sings,” said Rutledge. “We’re looking forward to being invited back and continuing the winning streak.”
The Holy Cross Academy Select Choir was formed in September of 2009, and just ten months later won the Gospel Choir Championship at Darien Lake Choral Competition last June. Future plans for the choir include a recording session of the anthem to send to other sports teams, their debut performance at the Oneida Jazz festival in March, and defending their Gospel Championship this coming June.
A Spring concert also in June will be free and open to the public.
