Barneveld, N.Y. – The Girl Scout Astronomy Club will kick-off Friday, October 30 with a Star Party from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Trenton Community Hall in Barneveld.
The party will give girls and adults an opportunity to learn the basics of using a telescope and star charts. If there is good weather, those attending will be able to view the Moon and Jupiter. Indoor activities will include making moon phase cookies, a play-dough solar system, and Jupiter sugar cookies. Cosmic juice will also be provided and those attending are encouraged to dress-up as their favorite out-of-this-world character. At the party there will be a list of upcoming activities in the planning stages for club members available and participants are welcome to make suggestions for activities.
The Girl Scout Astronomy Club will be holding monthly meetings on the second Friday of each month. Some of the meetings will include other star parties, some will be discussions about astronomical phenomena, and some will involve field trips to observatories in the area. Yearly dues for members will be $2 per person. Participants may join the club immediately or pick up an application to mail in.
The purpose of the Girl Scout Astronomy Club, funded in part by a grant from NASA, is to provide formal and informal educational opportunities for those interested in exploring the universe, clarify myths and misunderstandings, and enhance school curriculum.
