(Sylvan Beach, NY – Jan. 18, 2012) 48 year-old, Tammy Curry was located by the City of Rome Police Department and returned back home with her family.

State Police in Sylvan Beach are investigating the report of a missing person. Tammy L. Curry, age 48, was reported to have been admitted to the Rome Memorial Hospital on 01/11/12. She apparently left the hospital shortly after her arrival and she has not made any reported contact with her friends or family since that time.

Curry is a white female, 5 ft 1in and weighs 130 lbs. She has blond hair and brown eyes. She was last known to be staying in the Village of Sylvan Beach with the friends who initially took her to the hospital and who have now reported her missing.

Anyone who has seen Curry or who has any information regarding her whereabouts is asked to call the State Police at 762-4441.

Taberg Man Arrested for Burglary

(Town of Vienna, NY – Jan. 17, 2012) On Jan. 16 at about 1:05 p.m., a Trooper from the State Police station in Lee observed a suspicious vehicle parked on Oswego Road in the Town of Vienna.

Upon further investigation Lawrence C. Anken, 43, of 9344 Taberg-Florence Road, Taberg was located with the vehicle. A check of the area indicated that Anken had just burglarized a nearby residence and was returning to his vehicle to pick up the proceeds from that burglary.

All the stolen property was recovered and Anken was charged with third-degree Burglary. He was arraigned in the Village of Sylvan Beach court and remanded to the Oneida County Jail on $15,000 bail.

After Anken had been arrested, the State Police received further information that two white males were observed leaving a wooded area on Oswego Road near Meadows Road at the Town of Vienna/City of Rome line. A check of that area revealed that a barn at 4058 Oswego Road had also been burglarized and the proceeds of that burglary had been staged near the roadway so that they could be picked up at a later time. The suspects are believed to be associates of Anken’s and the two burglaries are believed to be connected.

The State Police are asking that anyone with any information regarding these burglaries call the State Police at 762-4441.

Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 26 in Sylvan Beach Honors Members

(Sylvan Beach, NY – Jan. 2012) U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 26 based in Sylvan Beach held its Change of Watch banquet Jan. 7, swearing in staff officers for 2012 and honoring 2011′s top performers.

Division 2 Vice Commander John Steinbarge of Baldwinsville administered the oath of office to newly elected Flotilla Commander William Cummings of Utica and Flotilla Vice Commander Karen Beehm of Hubbardsville, along with a number of appointed staff officers.

Steinbarge, Cummings and Beehm then presented several awards.

Thomas Paatz of Dolgeville received both the Flotilla’s Top Performer Award in Operations and the Division’s Commodore James J. Phillips Excellence in Operations Award for, among other things, spending the most time patrolling Oneida Lake and assisting boaters in distress.

David Troutman of Rome received the Flotilla’s Program Visitor Award for making the most visits — over 360 visits — to retail, boating and recreational outlets to promote boating safety. Troutman and Bonita Stilwell of Canastota shared the Flotilla’s Top Vessel Examiner Award for performing the most free safety checks for boaters.

Robert Stronach of Marcy was named the Flotilla’s Coast Guard Auxiliarist of the Year, reflecting participation in training, photographing and writing about missions, training and other activities, and designing Coast Guard Auxiliary publications.

Steinbarge made brief remarks about the need to continue addressing boating safety with the public, especially with paddle crafts becoming a popular recreational sport. “They’re selling thousands of paddle crafts,” he said, which presents an opportunity to provide safety education to reduce the number of mishaps and injuries.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary supports the U.S. Coast Guard and the public by patrolling the waterways, responding to boaters in distress, conducting search and rescue operations, promoting and teaching boating safety, offering free vessel exams, and providing auxiliary chefs (AuxChefs) for short tours at Coast Guard stations, on Coast Guard cutters, and at VIP events.

Newly Elected Coast Guard Auxiliary Leaders Assume Office in Central NY

(Dec. 13, 2011) Central New York members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary have elected leaders for 2011-2012 for Division 2 and its five flotillas.

Helen “Lou” Cummings of Utica is Division 2 commander and John Steinbarge of Baldwinsville is vice commander.

Cummings is a qualified boat crew member, instructor, recreational boating safety visitor, vessel examiner, and uninspected passenger vessel examiner.

Steinbarge is a qualified coxswain, instructor, recreational boating safety visitor, vessel examiner, watchstander and team coordination training facilitator.

The newly elected flotilla leaders are:

Flotilla 21, Syracuse: Flotilla Commander Kenneth Straw of Pennellville; and Vice Commander Daniel Welch of Nedrow.

Straw is a qualified aid to navigation verifier, instructor, recreational boating safety visitor, vessel examiner and uninspected passenger vessel examiner.

Welch is a qualified coxswain, instructor, vessel examiner and watchstander.

Flotilla 22, Ithaca: Flotilla Commander Paul Phelps of Cortland; and Vice Commander Robert Schleelein of Ithaca. Phelps and Schleelein both are qualified boat crew members.

Flotilla 24, Oswego: Flotilla Commander Jan Just of East Syracuse; and Vice Commander Deborah Somers of Fulton.

Just is a qualified boat crew member, instructor, recreational boating visitor and vessel examiner.

Somers is a qualified coxswain, instructor, vessel examiner and uninspected passenger vessel examiner.

Flotilla 26, Sylvan Beach: Flotilla Commander William Cummings of Utica; and Vice Commander Karen Beehm of Hubbardsville.

Coast Guard Honors Top Auxiliarists in Central New York

(Dec. 8, 2011) Ithaca resident Thomas J. Every, a qualified coxswain and instructor with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary’s Flotilla 22 in Ithaca, is the 2011 Division 2 Outstanding Auxiliarist. The award was announced Dec. 4 at the Division 2 Change of Watch banquet, held at the Fireside Inn in Baldwinsville. Division 2 encompasses the Central New York area, with five flotillas in Oswego, Syracuse, Bridgeport, Sylvan Beach and Ithaca.

Jan K. Just of East Syracuse was named 2011 Outstanding Flotilla commander. A member of Syracuse Flotilla 21, Just is a qualified boat crew member, instructor, recreational boating visitor and vessel examiner. Flotilla 21 also was named Outstanding Flotilla. As outgoing commander, Just accepted the award along with incoming commander Kenneth Straw of Pennellville.

The 2011 Commodore James J. Phillips Excellence in Operations Award went to Thomas W. Paatz of Dolgeville. A member of Flotilla 26 in Sylvan Beach, Paatz is a qualified coxswain, instructor, watchstander, qualification examiner and aid to navigation examiner.

The 2011 Division Commander’s Award went to Dale A. Currier of Oswego. He is a qualified instructor with Syracuse Flotilla 21.

The 2011 Division Vice Commander’s Award went to Michael J. Kennedy of Fayetteville. He is a qualified boat crew member, instructor and vessel examiner with Flotilla 214 in Bridgeport.

2011 Certificate Awards recognized six auxiliarists for outstanding volunteer performance.

Thomas Paatz, of Dolgeville and a member of Flotilla 26 in Sylvan Beach, was honored for 60.4 hours in operations work.

Michael Kennedy, of Fayetteville and a member of Bridgeport Flotilla 214, was recognized for 59.8 hours in operations.

Jan Just of East Syracuse was honored for 81.5 hours performing public affairs work with Syracuse Flotilla 21.

Daniel Garcia of Baldwinsville was honored for 86.5 hours performing public education. He is with Syracuse Flotilla 21.

David Troutman of Rome was recognized for making 367 visits to promote recreational boating safety. He is with Flotilla 26, Sylvan Beach.

Kenneth Straw of Pennellville was honored for performing 63 vessel examinations. He is with Syracuse Flotilla 21.

Helen “Lou” Cummings of Utica and John Steinbarge of Baldwinsville were sworn in as Division 2 commander and vice commander, respectively. They presided at the awards ceremony, with active duty Coast Guard leaders making the presentations, including Lt. Nate Johnson from Sector Buffalo and Senior Chief Joseph Orlando from Station Oswego.

The date of the Change of Watch and awards banquet coincidentally was the 69th anniversary of the tragic death of six Coast Guardsmen in the gale-whipped waters of Lake Ontario at Oswego Harbor. The keeper at the Oswego West Pierhead Lighthouse was long overdue for relief because of the storm, and when the winds had died down a bit, a Coast Guard boat made a keeper exchange, but then was severely damaged as waves tossed it about, explained guest speaker Theodore Panayotoff, chairman of the Lighthouse Restoration Committee for the City of Oswego. He wore an historic Coast Guard uniform from the early 1930s, when the lighthouse was constructed.

Declared an excess asset in 2006, the Coast Guard turned it over to the city three years later. While structurally sound, Panayotoff said, the lighthouse needs a lot of repairs, including haz-mat remediation for lead paint, asbestos and bird carcasses. They hope to begin the haz-mat remediation in 2012 as well as safety-related repairs.

Oneida County Youth Celebrate National 4-H Week Oct. 2-8

(Oneida County, NY – Oct. 2011) October 2-8 is National 4-H Week, and Oneida County is celebrating the 4-H youth who have made an impact on the community, and are stepping up to the challenges of a complex and changing world.

Recent findings from Tufts University’s 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development indicate that young people in 4-H are three times more likely to contribute to their communities than youth not participating in 4-H. Notably, the Tufts research discovered that the structured learning, encouragement and adult mentoring that 4-H’ers receive play a vital role in helping them actively contribute to their communities.

In Oneida County, more than 300 4-H members and 120 volunteers are involved in 4‑H. The Oneida County 4-H program reaches over 3000 total youth through after-school programs and other 4-H sponsored activities throughout the year.

Oneida county 4-H members are involved in a wide variety of projects from animals to robotics. They actively participate in public communication events, community service and project specific shows and competitions. 4-H volunteers guide youth by using their individual expertise and mentoring them throughout the year. An abundant amount of local, state, and national opportunities are available to those involved in 4-H. These opportunities and more are available through the 4-H program and help us build our leaders of tomorrow.

Searching for the Lost Treasures of Ancient History: Also Known as Antiquing in the Central New York Region

(Syracuse, NY – Sept. 28, 2011) The Central New York Region has everything a traveler could want out of a visit to New York State, from something old (historical landmarks, museums and rustic B&Bs) to something new (state-of-the-art science centers, modern theatrical performances and high-end spas). To emphasize the “something old,” the area is overflowing with quaint shops touting eclectic antiques and collectibles, offering a slice of the region’s rich past. It is truly a picker’s (and a historian’s) paradise.

For starters, the Madison-Bouckville area offers a year-round antique venue with over 30 shops featuring hundreds of dealers, plus the largest antique show in New York State every third week in August. This event, the Madison Bouckville Antique Week, draws more than 2,000 dealers for a weeklong show along one two-mile stretch of Route 20. Another superb find for antique hunters in Madison County is The Market at Oneida Commons, a neat little mall open year-round that’s packed with vintage items, crafts, jewelry, books, furniture, locally-produced Pride of NY foods and other odds and ends that stretch as far as the eye can see.

Cobbler & C. in Sharon Springs, Schoharie County, offers a treasure trove of antiques. Up on the second floor is a wide array of used, but “new to you” goods: a collection of old dishes, glassware, books, magazines and other collectibles.

In Oneida County, the Westmoreland Antique Center features 80 dealer spaces with a vast array of antiques and vintage collectibles like holiday merchandise, milk bottles, postcards and advertising collectibles, plus a vast selection of glassware, china and furniture.

Charlotte’s Antiques in Chenango County welcomes antique enthusiasts to pore over home décor, women’s clothing and jewelry, and rare collectibles, among other specialty items. For Iroquois artifacts, one-of-a-kind classics and various collectibles, Carriage Barn Antiques, Iroquois Antiques and Pheasant Farm Antiques are a few popular stops in the area.

The Little Falls Antique Center in Herkimer County showcases oldies but goodies from 18 dealers. Just a ways down the street, Stone Mill of Little Falls houses everything vintage from lighting, to clothing, to decorative arts and prints, plus local treasures like Oriental carpets from Erie Canal Carpets, sterling silver and cookbooks. The unexpected can be expected in the old factory atmosphere of this 1839 mill built on the banks of the Mohawk River, as the inventory is ever changing. Greater Binghamton’s Clinton Street, aptly named the “Antique Row,” is a hot spot for antiquing, hosting as many as 30 dealers at a given time. The locale makes perfect sense, as Clinton Street itself is an antique – it existed long before the city of Binghamton.

Cooperstown in Otsego County is saturated in antiquing opportunities. More than 50 shops line the area, from main streets to country roads, including NYS Route 7 corridor from Unadilla to Oneonta, the NYS Route 28 corridor from Oneonta to Cooperstown, and US Route 20, the road to the Madison-Bouckville Antique Show. For those seeking a myriad of vintage items, from china and glassware to historic textiles and furniture, shops like Barkley Barn Blue Ribbon Antiques, Lake Antiques and Antiques & Artifacts are must-sees. Even the antiquing venues themselves are fascinating and range from charming homes to old barns brimming with collectibles.

For some, a successful hunt for the perfect antique can take months or even years. The Central New York Region’s seemingly limitless supply of rare antiques and collectibles in dozens of shops across the area, however, can certainly help to shorten the duration of that hunt and make it quite enjoyable along the way.
