(Rome, NY – Jan. 2012) ACCESS Federal Credit Union recently announced the appointment of Sandra L. Reader to their professional staff. Reader has joined ACCESS in the position of Member Representative at their Rome branch.

Reader comes to ACCESS Federal Credit Union with more than 40 years experience in the banking industry, serving in varying capacities throughout her career. She most recently served as Vice President of Consumer Loans for Rome Savings Bank prior to its acquisition by Berkshire Bank. Reader said that she “hopes to use her vast banking experience to assist members and aid in the growth of the credit union.”

According to Thomas L. Owens, ACCESS President and CEO, bringing Reader on board serves to benefit both the credit union and the customers they serve.

“I am extremely pleased and very excited to have Sandy join our staff,” Owens said. “I’ve had a great business banking relationship with her which started over thirty years ago when we both worked for the Oneida National Bank.”

Owens indicated that Reader is a “perfect fit” for ACCESS, in that she gives priority to honest member service and relationships over organizational sales goals. “I know Sandy is looking forward to getting back to ‘old fashioned banking’ where she will have the authority to serve her long-time trusted bank clients. We are certainly looking forward to having her as part of the ACCESS team.”

In addition to her role as a banking professional, Reader is also an active member of the Rome community. She serves as a member of the Rome Area Chamber of Commerce and Zonta International, currently acting as president of the Rome Zonta Club. Reader resides in Rome with her husband, Doug.

ACCESS Federal Credit Union is based in Clinton with branches in Camden, Oneida, Sherrill, Rome and Waterville. Everyone who lives, worships or goes to school anywhere in Oneida County or the City of Oneida are eligible to join.

(Sherrill, NY- Feb. 1, 2012) The 2012 season is bringing about many changes for the Sherrill Silversmiths. The coaching staff will be completely revamped for next season, among other changes.

Ben Grimm, President and head coach of the Silversmiths has accepted a position at SUNY Oneonta as Interim head coach of their baseball program.

“I’m very excited to get an opportunity to be a head coach at the collegiate level, and at such a great institution as SUNY Oneonta,” said Grimm. “It’s something I’ve worked very hard to achieve.”

This meant that Grimm had to step down from his position as head coach of the Silversmiths. The team is saddened by Grimm’s departure, but ecstatic about his new opportunity.

“Ben leaving was a blow, he’s the heart and soul of this team and franchise,” said Vice-President and General Manager Matthew Rafte. “As a team, we feed off of his constant energy and positivity, but he’s not leaving, he’s just moving upstairs, so to speak.” Grimm will still hold a position in the Silversmiths front office.

Since Grimm left, the head coach position was left vacant, but it was quickly filled. Jimmy Habecker, hitting coach last season, stepped up and took the position.

“[Matt] Rafte and I feel that Jimmy is the correct choice to lead the Silversmiths on the field in 2012,” said Grimm. This will be Habecker’s second season with the team. Habecker is currently the assistant baseball coach at Finger Lakes Community College.

“First off, I would like to thank Ben Grimm and Matt Rafte for giving me the opportunity to be head coach, last summer with the team was a great one,” said Habecker. “I loved everything about the Silversmiths organization, especially the family atmosphere; family and baseball are two things that are very important to me.”

There have also been other staffing changes.

Dennis Duffy and Mike Sherlock will return to the team in new roles.

“I am happy to have them on the staff, they were a pleasure to coach and I’m looking forward to coaching with them,” said Habecker. Duffy will fill the pitching coach position this summer. He is currently a redshirt senior at American International College in Springfield, Mass, where he is a right-handed pitcher. Sherlock will volunteer as an assistant coach. He is a senior at SUNY New Paltz in New Paltz where he is an outfielder.

“They [Dennis and Mike] have spent the better part of the last three summers in the green and silver, they know the brand of baseball we like to play and have quality baseball minds,” said Rafte.

The Silversmiths are excited about getting the 2012 season underway. “I look forward to making the 2012 season a great one,” said Habecker.

(Utica, NY – Jan. 2012) The Mohawk Regional Information Center will host the T.H.E. Symposium VII on January 12 at SUNY Institute of Technology, 100 Seymour Road, Utica. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Kunsela Hall.

The Technology Heightens Education Symposium is an opportunity for area teachers and administrators to celebrate and share the ways they use technology as a tool to enhance student learning. Representatives from 52 school districts and four BOCES will attend the event.

At the Symposium, teachers and their students from 15 school districts in six counties (see next page) will set up demonstration booths and showcase exemplary uses of technology. Presentations will include: daily blogs by first graders; fifth-grade podcast tutorials; a remix of “West Side Story” music using Garage Band; student-built and programmed Lego robots; student-designed video games; and iPods in health education.

MORIC will also present its annual Recognizing Our Own awards to honor one outstanding teacher and student from each BOCES region for their integration of technology into the classroom or curriculum.

In addition, the Technology Playground will allow elementary students a chance to share their expertise and explore emerging technologies.

This year’s keynote speaker is Travis Allen, the founder of the iSchool Initiative, a student-led nonprofit that seeks to educate students on how to become lifelong digital learners and raise awareness about technology in the classroom. Allen will speak about “How I survive college with only an iPhone” and share his perspectives as a 21st Century Learner. He will provide attendees with information about using SmartPhones and Tablets to engage in more effective learning. His talk begins at 9:30 a.m.

The benefits from this campaign fund the KEYS Program’s<ins datetime="2011-11-22T19:11"> </ins>Hearts of Hope project that delivers care packages to kids in children’s hospitals both locally and across the US. Additionally, the proceeds fund bedside musical performances for kids with cancer which delivers HOPE to those children who are suffering from life threatening illnesses-all at no cost to their families.

KEYS is asking businesses and individuals to make donations, join their membership, or have fundraisers with the proceeds benefiting HOPE FOR KEYS KIDS. The Annual fundraising campaign runs until May 18, 2012.

“The Tony Stewart Foundation has selected the KEYS Program as one of its top 40 Grant Accelerator Charities in the US and has granted KEYS an award of $7,500 to bring HOPE to kids in need in 2012,” said KEYS founder Colleen Bennett. “Tony is encouraging everyone to join him by making a donation to the KEYS program so kids everywhere can “hear the music…feel the hope.””
