(Oneida Castle, NY) Holy Cross Academy has scheduled a study skills program from Monday through Thursday Aug. 16 to 19, for students entering the seventh, eighth or ninth grades. The program runs from 9 to 11:30 a.m., with break time and fun activities, for each of the four days. Students attending any area public or private school may enroll.

The workshop will include time management, study tools and habits, organization tips, note-taking, reading strategies, and test-taking techniques. Students’ individual learning styles will be identified and utilized in instruction.

New elements have been added to the program, allowing returning students to review and update their skills in preparation for the new school year.

HCA to host soccer game, priests vs. Holy Cross team

(Oneida Castle, NY) On Saturday July 17 at 10 a.m., Holy Cross Academy will host the first annual “Men in Black” Soccer Game at the school. The Office of Vocation Promotion of the Syracuse Diocese, headed by Fr. Joe O’Connor, is sponsoring the event. Its purpose is to provide an opportunity for the local community to support the priests and seminarians of the Diocese. A family cookout will follow. Donations will be gratefully accepted to cover the cost of the meal.

The “Men in Black” team, composed of diocesan priests and seminarians, will take the field against the soccer team of Holy Cross Academy. One reason for the game’s location is that the HCA 2010 Valedictorian, Dan Collins, is entering the seminary for the diocese this fall and will be the starting goalie for the “Men in Black.” Dan was the HCA goalie for its championship soccer teams in 2008 and 2009. The “Men in Black” squad will also include priests currently working in the diocese from foreign countries, including Poland and Kenya.

O’Connor thought that with the excitement of the World Cup going on now, a soccer match would be a prime opportunity for local Catholics to support and get to know the priests and seminarians of the diocese. The “Men in Black” theme also has been used for annual basketballs games, which pit the priests and seminarians against local parish teams. With the success of the basketball games, O’Connor decided to move on to another popular sport in Upstate New York – soccer.

Holy Cross Academy is proud to host this event and has partnered with the Knights of Columbus E. Bart Hanifin Council 473. Members of the Council, headed by Grand Knight Michael Dwyer, have volunteered to assist with the family cookout following the game.

Holy Cross Academy is a private junior-senior high school teaching in the Catholic tradition. The Academy is located at 4020 Barrington Road in Oneida Castle.

For more information, please call 363-1669 or visit www.holycrossacademy.com.

All Graduates are College-Bound this Fall

(Oneida Castle, NY – June 18, 2010) Families, friends and teachers of the Holy Cross Academy Class of 2010 gathered Friday evening at the high school chapel for the Academy’s ninth commencement.

Fr. Joseph O’Connor, Director of Vocations for the Diocese of Syracuse, presided over a Mass and addressed the graduates during the ceremony.

“The way you live your lives will make God believable. Are you going to make God real to a world that is starving for truth?” he told the seniors.

The ten seniors – all college-bound this fall - received their diplomas from Daniel Miller, President of the Board of Trustees, and Principal Therese Maciag.

“One defining characteristic of Holy Cross Academy is the way it resembles a family, said Principal Maciag. “We strive to create an environment that is nurturing, supportive, built upon love. The class of 2010 is the realization of this quality in a tangible way.”

The Valedictorian was Daniel G. Collins, son of Pat and Joanne Collins, Wampsville. The Salutatorian was Teresa A. Street, daughter of Kenneth and Mary Ellen Street, Rome.

In his Valedictorian Address, Daniel Collins mixed gratitude with his characteristic humor.

“All you can hope for is that when you graduate you have enough inner kid to have fun but enough responsible adult to survive,” he said.

The graduates and their families gathered for a reception following the ceremonies.

“Holy Cross Academy is proud to send these ten young men and women on to college and the world to share their faith and talents,” said Trustee Margaret Miller. “Their light will shine for years to come.”

The graduates of the Class of 2010 and where they plan to attend college are:

James J. Cobb (SUNY Canton), Daniel G. Collins (St. Charles Borromeo Seminary College), Amanda M. King (Houghton College), Stephen D. Miller (Christendom College), Braden J. Morrissey (North Country Community College), Caitlyn M. Parody (MVCC), Teresa A. Street (MVCC), Mark C. van Lieshout (OCC), Nicholas van Lieshout (John Paul the Great Catholic University), Joseph Young (MVCC).

(Oneida Castle, March 16, 2010) Holy Cross Academy English students from all grade levels have been accepted for publication for the Fall 2009 edition of the Creative Communication Anthology.

According to its website, Creative Communication is a national writing contest organization that is devoted to the promotion of writing, teaching and appreciation of student writing.

The poetry contest allowed students to compete with their peers in New York State for the opportunity to be published.

“This is a significant accomplishment for the students,” said HCA English teacher Carol Cramer. “Teaching them on a daily basis, I see the creative minds of the future.”

Those students accepted for publication, with grade and poem title, are the following:

Adriana Acosta, 7, “Inner Feelings”; Jordan Hatch, 8, “It’s a Baby Girl!”; Lydia Scheuermann, 8,” Light in the Cave”; Kaylee DeZalia, 9, “Only Child”; Amy Collins, 10, “Against the Current”; Michelle Stadelmaier 11, “A Rusty Penny”; Amanda King, 12, “Out of Breath”; Stephen Miller, 12, “The Homeless Man”.

Since the fall of 2007, HCA students have participated in the Creative Communication poetry and essay contests. In the fall of 2008, Senior Dan Collins was a Winner of Distinction –Top Ten in New York State – for his poem entitled “Letters.”

Students whose poems also have been published previously include:

11th graders Cody Anderson, Catie Pfluke, Michelle Stadelmaier, Hannah Scheuermann, Kevin Rudd, and 10th grader Amy Collins.
