(Verona, NY) Ryan Langone of Rome, N.Y. was named the Oneida Nation’s Employee of the Year at a recognition dinner held March 4 in The Showroom at Turning Stone Resort. Langone was awarded a trip for two to one of the following vacation destinations: Disney World, Las Vegas or the Grand Canyon. To further demonstrate the Oneida Nation’s appreciation to its employees, the Nation provided the same prize to the runner-up; Heather Light of North Bay, a public affairs assistant in the Nation’s Media Relations office.

Langone started work at the Emerald Restaurant at Turning Stone in November 2002 and was promoted to line cook at that restaurant in May 2004. First chosen as Employee of the Month for October 2009, he has an associate’s degree in culinary arts from SUNY Cobleskill. His wife, Heather, is a supervisor at Season’s Harvest, a buffet restaurant at Turning Stone.

In nominating Langone for the award, Emerald Sous Chef Charles Loosman said, “Ryan goes above and beyond day in and day out, working multiple shifts, helping out in prep and also learning soups and sauces. He is always positive, very dependable, helpful and an asset to the restaurant.”

M3P Media, LLC, has signed a release for its new publication, Madison County Courier, to be used as prop or set dressing for the highly anticipated movie “Knockout.”

“We are thrilled to be a very small part of a very big movie,” said Mike Bova, publisher of M3P Media, LLC.

According to promoters, the film stars mixed martial arts fighter Gina Carano as Mallory Kane, a young, tough, beautiful freelance covert operative. She is hired out by her handler, Kenneth, to various global entities to perform jobs that governments can’t authorize and heads of state would rather not know about. For all her looks and youth, Mallory is still the best in her field, and her skills are in constant demand.

After a mission to rescue a hostage in Barcelona, Kenneth quickly dispatches Mallory on another mission to Dublin. There she partners with another operative, the suave and debonair Paul. When the operation goes awry and Mallory finds she has been double-crossed, she needs to use all of her skills, tricks and abilities to escape an international manhunt, make it back to the United States, protect her family and exact revenge on those that have betrayed her.

According to information on IMDb.com, producers have signed actors Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas, Ewen McGregor and Channing Tatum, to name a few.

Knockout, which is filming now, is being directed by Steven Soderbergh, who also directed “Erin Brockovich” and “Ocean’s Eleven.”

The movie is expected to be released sometime next year.

Caption: I tried to muster up a smile from Brandy when I took this photo. This is the best I could get out of her. It was taken at Durhamville Day in August of this year.

The world lost one great lady this week. Brandyann Phelps, town of Vienna historian, author of several books, reporter and columnist died near her daughter and grandchildren in Morgan City, La. Thursday Oct. 29. She was 63 years old.

I first met Brandy about two years ago when I attended a Vienna Town Board meeting. I was reporting on the meeting, as was she. We sat at this little table together with our recorders and notebooks spread out on the small space exclusively for reporters. She talked pretty much through the entire meeting, which gave new meaning to the phrase “southern hospitality.” But I liked her right from the beginning. She was personable and down to earth, all the qualities I find endearing in a person.

I became familiar with her Murray Brook Frog, the weekly column she wrote for several publications. Many of her columns can be found on this web site. Just recently the Frog celebrated its 100th birthday. She’s also the author of an historical novel “Brandy of the Bayou,” and two historical books, “Sylvan Beach and the Rock,” and “Around Sylvan Beach.”

Brandy thoroughly enjoyed Vienna town history and made it a personal mission to preserve as much of that as possible. She was proud of her roots there.

Over the past couple of years I read everyone of her columns and upon reading them I could almost picture her delving over books and trampling through cemeteries to learn as much about the people as she could to educate herself and then share that history with the world. It’s a painstaking job but time and time again she told me her reward was sharing that information. Her latest mission was to have “Sophie’s Cemetery” restored and began a fund so that someday that will be possible. Nicol Baker, Vienna town supervisor told me the town of Vienna is collecting contributions in Brandy’s memory for this fund. I think Brandy would have liked that.

Brandy was also thrilled to report to me when the town was given space in a church to house a museum for all of its history. Nicol told me the town would also like to dedicate that museum in Brandy’s honor. Brandy would have been honored by this I’m sure.

A memorial service will be held for Brandy on Monday Nov. 1 at 1:30 p.m. at Vienna Town Hall. Friends and family of Brandy are invited to come and share their grief and stories with the town. Nicol said that Brandy has been an asset to the town and hearing of her death has devastated them. “We are still in shock,” she said.

I am so glad I got to know Brandy, if only for just a short time. Our relationship began as professional but it didn’t take long before we ended our conversations with, “love ya.” She had a kind heart and never a mean word for anyone. I’m going to miss her but I know she’s ok because she told me that when the Lord called her she would be ready. Her faith was a big part of who she was and helped her through any tough times. I learned that about her early on.

Brandy was born Sept. 1, 1946. She called North Bay home but for many years she lived in Berwick, La. She leaves behind her lifetime partner Garry R. White of Camden; a daughter Tawney White of Morgan City, La.; two grandchildren, Monique and Mario also from Louisiana; a daughter, Arika of Berwick, La. and many, many friends who loved her.

Caption: Ola and Lola Annis were born in 1888 on West Lake Street in North Bay. Their mother, Mertie Auchard Annis born in 1857, was also a twin.

With the great advances in science multiple births have become a common occurrence. That wasn’t so in the early years, when medicine was precarious at best and child birth was oft times visited with sadness.

In the early 1800s Nathan and Amanda Auchard moved to North Bay and purchased the easterly half of Lot 95 of Scriba’s Patent. They had three daughters, Jane, born in 1850; Amanda and Mertie were twins born in 1857.

Jane married James Louden; he had the first store in North Bay; located on the corner of West Lake St. and Route 49.

Amanda married Merritt Balch; they had two sons; both of whom died early in their infancy. Years later Amanda had a stroke and moved in with her elderly father who was by then living on West Lake Street in North Bay. Balch ran off with the maid, she was 20 years younger than him. They wound up living in Utica, got married and had two children.

January 2nd, 1878 Mertie married Albert S. Annis in the Methodist parsonage in North Bay. Albert was one of nine children, his parents moved to Oneida County in 1862. A ship builder; his factory was on Oneida Lake east of Murray Brook in North Bay. They had three daughters, Edith born in 1883 and twins Ola and Lola born in 1888.

They lived on West Lake St. just a short piece from their Uncle James Louden’s store. “Jimmy Low’s” must have been an exciting place for a kid; his general store carried everything from candy to calico and was a center for local gossip.

1907 Lola married Earl Penoyer and in 1909 gave birth to triplets; Ruth, Reta and Ruby. Unfortunately Lola and two of her daughters died with-in a week; only Ruth survived. A large gathering of family and friends attended the funeral. Lola age 21 wore her wedding dress from that happy day just one year before. Beside her on either side lay her sweet daughters Reta and Ruby; so many remarked it looked as if they were just sleeping.

Nettie Rogers married Francis McClanathan on June 12th, 1895; they had one daughter Mina.

Mina married Orville Brown; Orville’s father was Albert Brown, he owned a cheese factory in Vienna.

Mina and Orville lived with Mina’s parents, Nettie and Francis and had 14 children which included two sets of twins. The first set of twins, two boys; were still born and were buried in the flower garden.

On October 23, 1885 the Loomis triplets, Oliver, Eugene, and Crawford, were born on East Lake Street in the second house on the right facing north; their father Charles was a farmer. Sixty one years later I was born and I grew up in the same house, “the house on the hill.” I was not a twin or a triplet, but I feel like I have lived at least three lives, each chapter a book unto itself.

Through the years during hard times and good my greatest pride has always been that I was raised by good folks in a little town in New York State that nobody ever heard of. North Bay, New York is a very little town, to its credit it lies beside the shallow blue waters of Oneida Lake and though I’ve lived many places across these United States, North Bay is my home and always will be. I am enthralled, excited and inspired by the rich history of its people and the resilient beauty of its natural resources.
