Glow Golf raises $1,300 for The Peacemaker Program

(Rome, NY) The Peacemaker Program, Inc. raised $1,300 from its ninth annual Peacemaker After Dark Charity Glow in the Dark Golf Tournament on July 16.

Glow Golf is the organization’s annual golf tournament where participants compete by moonlight and was held this year at Mohawk Glen Golf Club on Perimeter Road in Rome.

A total of 13 teams, competed in the nine-hole tournament. The winner was Team Murad, consisting of George Murad and Paul Norton both of Utica, Luke Colenzo of Whitesboro, and John Herbowy of Rome.

In second place was Team Mack Family, consisting of Jim and Cathy Mack and their two children, of Deerfield, NY.

The longest drive contest was won by Zack Raynsford of Oneida.

Teams also competed for the title of best decorated cart. The winner of the cart decorating contest was Team Peacemaker, consisting of Anthony Scibelli of Clinton, Beverly Quist of Utica, Elieen LaBarbera of Barneveld and Denise Flihan of Whitesboro.

Team Nacki acres came in second. That team included Jason Gugnacki of Utica, Scott Ingmire of Oneida, Tom Galle of Syracuse and Jason Falk of Clinton.

Hit and Run Leads to DWI

(Deerfield, NY - July 14, 2010) On July 14 at approximately 7:19 a.m. Marcy based State Police were dispatched to a hit and run motor vehicle accident on Floyd Avenue in the Town of Deerfield. Investigation revealed 27 year old Tiffany Teesdale of 1022 Ney Ave. in Utica was operating her vehicle on Floyd Avenue when she struck a parked car. Teesdale fled the scene and was located at a nearby residence.

Teesdale was arrested for driving while intoxicated. Her BAC was .21 percent, which is nearly three times the State legal limit of .08 percent.

Teesdale was issued traffic tickets returnable to the Town of Deerfield Court at a later date.

Local Sweet Adelines Chapter Dissolves

Three new groups emerge

(Oneida, NY) After 31 years of harmonizing barbershop style, members of Sound of Silver Chorus have decided to call it quits.

“After much discussing and agonizing, the 19 singers voted to dissolve the local chapter of Sweet Adelines International,” said Rose Hosp. “In many attempts to sign on new members needed to revitalize and strengthen the group, no new singers were found. Other concerns added to the decision to dissolve as the only viable solution.”

Hosp said the group met in Oneida and its members came from all over including Oriskany, Utica, New Hartford, Clinton, Wampsville, Canastota, Chittenango, Remsen and VanBuren. She said in order to have a balanced performance at least 16 members are needed and not just any members, but voices that sing particular parts.

“At times we had to refuse an engagement because we didn’t have all the parts,” Hosp said.

And it took dedication and commitment to memorize music and perform. The group rehearsed year round, when others take the summer off, she said.

Fortunately, three quartets have immerged from the group so ladies barbershop harmony will still ring in the Central New York area.

Harmony Time is one of those quartets. Its members are from the Chittenango and Canastota areas. Three members of the BARBer Shoppe Belles live in the Utica area and one is from Van Buren. The other group, Notes 2U hails its members from Utica, Syracuse, Deerfield and Manlius.

The quartets are available to sing at any engagement. Harmony Time and the “Belles” have performed as a double quartet and will perform at the Vienna Historical Society this summer. Harmony Time and Notes 2U also performed at this year’s Oz-Stravaganza in Chittenango.

“We don’t need equipment or a lot of space,” Hosp said.

Hosp said Sweet Adelines International is very much alive and who knows, maybe interest will start up again in the area.

“The chorus sincerely thanks all those who have supported Sound of Silver over the past 31 years,” Hosp said. “It certainly provided its members with fun, musical education and harmony.”

Sauquoit Woman arrested for DWI

(Remsen, NY 3/14/10) The State Police in Remsen arrested Kimberly Welch, age 25, of Paris Hill Rd in the Town of Sauquoit for Aggravated DWI. Welch had a .21% BAC at the time of her arrest. She was issued tickets and released. She is to appear in the Town of Deerfield court on 03/23/10 at 6PM.

Madison County Courier To Be Used As Movie Prop

M3P Media, LLC, has signed a release for its new publication, Madison County Courier, to be used as prop or set dressing for the highly anticipated movie “Knockout.”

“We are thrilled to be a very small part of a very big movie,” said Mike Bova, publisher of M3P Media, LLC.

According to promoters, the film stars mixed martial arts fighter Gina Carano as Mallory Kane, a young, tough, beautiful freelance covert operative. She is hired out by her handler, Kenneth, to various global entities to perform jobs that governments can’t authorize and heads of state would rather not know about. For all her looks and youth, Mallory is still the best in her field, and her skills are in constant demand.

After a mission to rescue a hostage in Barcelona, Kenneth quickly dispatches Mallory on another mission to Dublin. There she partners with another operative, the suave and debonair Paul. When the operation goes awry and Mallory finds she has been double-crossed, she needs to use all of her skills, tricks and abilities to escape an international manhunt, make it back to the United States, protect her family and exact revenge on those that have betrayed her.

According to information on IMDb.com, producers have signed actors Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas, Ewen McGregor and Channing Tatum, to name a few.

Knockout, which is filming now, is being directed by Steven Soderbergh, who also directed “Erin Brockovich” and “Ocean’s Eleven.”

The movie is expected to be released sometime next year.

United Way Celebration held today

(Utica, NY – Jan. 20, 2010) United Way invites the entire region to a community-wide celebration of the 2009 Campaign. The event will be held in the lobby of M &T Bank at 233 Genesee Street at 5:00 PM on Wednesday January 20. Attendees can park in the lot behind the building.

“This was a community-wide effort, and we want everyone to come and celebrate this remarkable achievement with us,” said John Hobika, Jr., the 2009 Campaign Chair.

The event kicks off at 5:00PM and includes great food, lots of recognition, music from Monk Rowe, and a special performance by Danceworks.

The event is open to the entire public and attendees can call 733-4691 ext 223 for reservations. The cost is $15 and can be paid at the door

Deerfield Resident Named to HCCC Dean’s Lists

(Herkimer, NY) One hundred eighty-eight students have been named to the President’s List at Herkimer County Community College for the fall 2009 semester, and 395 students have been named to the Dean’s List. The distinction recognizes outstanding academic achievement.

The President’s List recognizes students who have earned a minimum 3.8 average on a 4.0 scale for the past semester (President’s List students are noted with an asterisk*).

The Dean’s List recognizes students with an average from 3.25 to 3.8.

Personal Injury Auto Accident in the Town of Deerfield

(Town of Deerfield, NY) On 01/08/10, at approximately 3:27PM, the State Police based out of Marcy investigated a two car personal injury motor vehicle accident that occurred on Trenton Rd in the Town of Deerfield.

The investigation revealed that Michele Dinigro aged 45 from Utica, NY was operating her 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix northbound on Trenton Rd in the Town of Deerfield, when her vehicle was struck from the rear by a 1986 Ford F-150 that was being driven by Dennis J. Clark, aged 40 from Remsen NY. The accident was the result of Clark following too closely, and being unable to stop when Dinigro slowed to make a right turn into her driveway.

Clark was transported to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for back and leg pains. Dinigro was not injured.

The investigation is continuing.
