(Rome, NY – Jan. 2012) ACCESS Federal Credit Union recently announced the appointment of Sandra L. Reader to their professional staff. Reader has joined ACCESS in the position of Member Representative at their Rome branch.

Reader comes to ACCESS Federal Credit Union with more than 40 years experience in the banking industry, serving in varying capacities throughout her career. She most recently served as Vice President of Consumer Loans for Rome Savings Bank prior to its acquisition by Berkshire Bank. Reader said that she “hopes to use her vast banking experience to assist members and aid in the growth of the credit union.”

According to Thomas L. Owens, ACCESS President and CEO, bringing Reader on board serves to benefit both the credit union and the customers they serve.

“I am extremely pleased and very excited to have Sandy join our staff,” Owens said. “I’ve had a great business banking relationship with her which started over thirty years ago when we both worked for the Oneida National Bank.”

Owens indicated that Reader is a “perfect fit” for ACCESS, in that she gives priority to honest member service and relationships over organizational sales goals. “I know Sandy is looking forward to getting back to ‘old fashioned banking’ where she will have the authority to serve her long-time trusted bank clients. We are certainly looking forward to having her as part of the ACCESS team.”

In addition to her role as a banking professional, Reader is also an active member of the Rome community. She serves as a member of the Rome Area Chamber of Commerce and Zonta International, currently acting as president of the Rome Zonta Club. Reader resides in Rome with her husband, Doug.

ACCESS Federal Credit Union is based in Clinton with branches in Camden, Oneida, Sherrill, Rome and Waterville. Everyone who lives, worships or goes to school anywhere in Oneida County or the City of Oneida are eligible to join.

News from New York State Division of Military & Naval Affairs

(Rome, NY – Jan. 26, 2012) Nearly 200 New York Air National Guardsmen, Canadian Forces members, federal civilians and guests were in attendance at the Radisson Hotel in Utica last Friday, Jan. 20, as the Eastern Air Defense Sector recognized its outstanding performers from 2011.

“EADS’ mission of protecting the eastern U.S. airspace requires consistent excellence from all of our staff,” said Col. John Bartholf, EADS Commander. “Our 2011 award winners distinguished themselves by going above and beyond our high standards and I congratulate each of them on their outstanding accomplishments and thank them for their extraordinary efforts.”

EADS employs more than 400 active-duty military, federal civilians, civilian contractors and part-time Air National Guardsmen and the unit recognized outstanding performers in seven categories. The categories were: company grade officer (junior officers below the rank of major), senior non- commissioned officer, noncommissioned officer, junior enlisted airman, honor guard member and honor guard program manager. The outstanding civilian of the year was also recognized.

Award recipients were:

He also led a combined fire, police and military color guard for the 9-11 10th anniversary commemoration in Rome.

• Master Sgt. Jeffrey Lamarche, Deansboro, Outstanding Honor Guard Program Manager. In addition to organizing and coordinating honor guard schedules, Master Sgt. Lamarche personally participated in 65 percent of EADS honor guard details, including 35 funerals. Master Sgt. Lamarche was also named outstanding Honor Guard Program Manager for New York State for the second consecutive year.

• Krispen Dorfman, Rome, Outstanding Civilian. A resource advisor and information technology specialist, Dorfman is responsible for the operations division budget and oversees a wide variety of supporting tasks. This is the third consecutive year that Dorfman has been named EADS Outstanding Civilian.

(Dec. 5, 2011) To help “kick-off” recycling and waste reduction programs this fall, the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority teamed up with Nike Reuse-A-Shoe to conduct sneaker drives in local schools. The initiative was offered to all public and private K-12 schools buildings in Oneida and Herkimer Counties.

Schools were asked to collect as many worn out sneakers as possible, instead of throwing them in the trash. Then, OHSWA collected and sent the sneakers to Nike Reuse-A-Shoe to be recycled into rubber, foam and fiber materials used for building new places, such as playgrounds, running tracks, football fields, basketball courts and more.

The purpose of this program was to continue to raise student and community awareness of reducing, reusing and recycling.

Fifteen schools in the region participated in the program this fall. Many schools had Student Councils, Green Teams, and other Environmental Clubs take charge of the program.

“Some schools developed contests for the program that helped increase participation and awareness as well,” said Jamie Tuttle, Authority School Recycling Coordinator. “Keeping students thinking and excited about recycling only helps us spread awareness and increase recycling efforts.”

Through promoting this program, students have been motivated to think “outside of the box” and realize that there are many items outside of paper, plastic, metal and glass that can be reused or recycled.

“Once items are past the point of being reused, we hope that our residents look to our many recycling opportunities before they settle for the trash can,” stated Tuttle.

This initiative has allowed schools in the region to work together for the same cause—promoting environmental stewardship, diverting waste from our landfill and conserving natural resources and energy.

The cooperative efforts between participating schools proved to be successful as OHSWA collected almost 1,000 pairs of sneakers from participating schools during the last week of November. The amount of sneakers collected weighed approximately one ton.

“The schools that participated should be very proud,” continued Tuttle. “This is a perfect example of how people can come together to make a big difference through simple actions.”

*The 15 schools that participated are as follows:

1. Poland Central School

2. Holland Patent Middle School

3. Dolgeville Elementary School

4. Clinton Middle and High School

5. Jones Elementary School (Utica)

6. Staley Upper Elementary School (Rome)

7. Camden Elementary School

8. Jarvis Junior/Senior High School (Mohawk)

9. New York Mills Central School

Jordan Zalepeski, of Camden, sets up her shelter at Morrisville State College. She was among Morrisville State College students who slept outdoors in a handmade shelter to help raise awareness about homelessness.

By Franci Valenzano

(Morrisville, NY – Nov. 21) The number nine glowing through the side of Justin Larmon’s project drew towering attention to the neatly four-tiered, red and white shelter he built to the likeness of a wedding cake.

The digit was a daunting reminder of the massive devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans that left thousands of people homeless, and a reference to actor and film producer Brad Pitt’s “Make it Right Foundation” to help rebuild the hard-hit Lower 9th Ward.

Larmon, 26, of Earlville, was among eight Morrisville State College students who built homeless shelters then set them up in front of Hamilton Hall to help raise awareness about homelessness. Students spent weeks planning and designing the shelters, an annual project that is part of Professor Anne Englot’s Architectural Design I class.

This year, students were also assigned a particular issue that related to homelessness or could make someone homeless, such as unemployment, lack of affordable housing, deinstitutionalization, hurricanes, tsunamis, domestic violence, veterans, alcoholism, and drug abuse, and had to incorporate them into their shelters.

Clever ideas and use of materials defined students’ structures, which varied in shape and size. Some were light and easily toted on students’ backs, while others were designed with wheels or wood so they were portable and could also be dragged through elements like snow.

Larmon, a landscape architectural studies major was among a handful of students who along with Professor Englot, spent the night in their shelters. He shared his temporary home with his pit bull, Bentley.

Larmon’s first brush with homelessness was an eye opener.

“You think it doesn’t exist here locally,” he said, “but it does and a lot of people are affected by it.”

Inside his shelter, built to resemble a tiered wedding cake and the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Larmon also devised a water-collection system out of PVC pipes. Constructed mainly of cardboard boxes and plastic purchased from Lowes, his shelter came well within the $25 budget allotted to students.

Students relied on donated materials, castoffs found in dumpsters and on roadsides, and items they had at home or in their rooms to stay within their budget.

Olivia Kasprzyk, 20, of Oriskany, an entrepreneurial and small business management student, limited her purchases to Velcro, piping, tape and glue.

Prior to designing their individual shelters, students first researched rural homelessness. Given a list of rules to follow (shelters had to be habitable, portable, resistant to moisture and cold, provide light and ventilation to the interior, and be aesthetically pleasing), the rest was up to them.

Dan Cuebas, 20, of Long Island, an entrepreneurial and small business management student, based his shelter on homeless veterans. Resembling an Army truck, his 50-pound structure was draped in blue tarp and designed with wooden runners along the bottom that could easily slide in snow. He utilized skills honed from a wood technology degree he already has from Morrisville State College.

Students’ experiences were documented in an hourly journal they were required to keep.

“I live for experiences like this,” said Jordan Zalepeski, 18, of Camden, an architectural studies and design major, about sleeping overnight in her shelter. “This is a way for me to help raise awareness about homelessness.”

Students’ efforts were just part of what faculty, staff and students on the Morrisville State College campus did to raise education, action and awareness about hunger and homelessness during National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week Nov. 14-20.

The campus was among churches, schools, and service agencies who partnered to address the issue in Madison County, collaborating with the Community Action Partnership (CAP) of Madison County.

Englot and her students also volunteered at CazCares fresh fruit and vegetable distribution event. CazCares is a food pantry and clothing closet that serves low income residents of the Cazenovia School District and surrounding areas of Madison County.

Citizenship is a large part of 4-H. We were pleased to have Mark Smith from the FEED OUR VETS FOOD PANTRY in attendance to speak to us and receive the food that was gathered for our Vets.

Thank-you to the following local businesses for support of the 4-H Program:

Chobani Greek Yogurt

Tops of Rome

HP Hood

Cargill Animal Nutrition

Farm Credit East, ACA

And Thank-you to Abagail Pilbeam for being our Hostess
