Derbies Sweep the State This Summer

(Boonville, NY) This summer there is a new trend on the New York must-have list: a seat at the local demolition derby. A grassroots fixture of fairs and race tracks across the country, demolition derbies crashed into the heart of Americana in the 1950’s and haven’t left since. Derby enthusiast Chris Marquart believes the misjudged motorsport deserves a place in the hearts of his fellow New Yorkers.

Marquart, who attended his first derby at the age of three, explains the appeal: “It’s mayhem and madness and it’s brilliant when you think about it – it pares down the most exciting and dangerous parts of a typical oval track race.” Marquart was recently named an Ambassador for the DEMOLITION DERBY LEAGUE (DDL), the international organizing body for combative motorsports. He points out that although some derbies have a “hokey redneck stigma,” in reality the sport requires knowledge of physics, driving strategy, and technical expertise – not to mention a flair for drama.

DDL Commissioner Dudley Disastro states: “We’re excited to bring some exposure to New York derbies – there are some amazing shows in the area, with different events, multiple heats and purses up to $10,000.” This summer’s shows vary in levels of expertise and degrees of legal car modification, with plenty of opportunities for first-time derby drivers to participate.

The DDL is pleased to announce the following events in the Summer 2010 NY Demolition Derby season:

Caption: Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1933 to take unemployed men (ages 18-25) and have them work on building state parks, planting trees, building roads and bridges and fighting fires. Each camp had about 200 men who lived in barracks heated by wood or
coal stoves. Army officers supervised the boys and they taught the importance of discipline and order. You can see some of the World War I clothing and boots near the cots. The boys signed up for a 6 month period and could resign if they didn’t get a job. They could only work for two years. The boys were paid $30 a month but $25 went home to their parents. They received $5 spending money that had to last for the month. (Courtesy Joe Gaetano)
Most of the boys didn’t eat lunch here because they were out working on projects. They got a bag lunch that contained two sandwiches (peanut butter and jelly, the
most popular) and a fruit. Supper was about 5 p.m. and the boys could eat all they wanted. (Courtesy Joe Gaetano)

unprofitable trees. They cut the wood and used it to heat the camp buildings and burned the brush. A local experienced man (LEM) supervised the CCC boys and taught them important skills such as forestry, carpentry, masonry etc. The young men (ages 18-25) worked eight hours a day were paid $30 a month

(Utica, NY) On Tuesday, June 22, the Oneida County Historical Society will host a reunion of Civilian Conservation Corps alumni, family, and friends, starting at 6 p.m. This special event is free and open to the public. It takes place at the society’s home at 1608 Genesee St. in Utica. The attendees will celebrate the 77th anniversary of the founding of the CCC by sharing their stories and pictures of the CCC camps.

The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) began on March 31, 1933 under President Roosevelt’s “New Deal” to relieve the poverty and unemployment of the Depression. Camps were set up in many New York towns, state parks and forests. Workers built trails, roads, campsites and dams, stocked fish, built and maintained fire tower observer’s cabins and telephone lines, fought fires, and planted millions of trees. The CCC disbanded in 1942 due to the need for men in World War II.

Author and historian Marty Podskoch will give a short Power Point presentation on the history, lore and legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps camps in New York. CCC alumni will have time to share their stories of their days in CCC camps both in New York and other states.

Podskoch is a retired teacher and the author of five books: Fire Towers of the Catskills: Their History and Lore, two Adirondack fire tower books: Adirondack Fire Towers: Their History and Lore, the Southern Districts, and Northern Districts and two other books, Adirondack Stories: Historical Sketches and Adirondack Stories II: Historical Sketches from his weekly illustrated newspaper column. He is presently conducting research on Civilian Conservation Camps in the Adirondacks and Connecticut, and is keenly interested in meeting individuals who may have CCC stories to contribute to his next book. Marty will have all of his books available after the presentation for sale and signing.

For more information on the reunion, call Brian Howard, OCHS Executive Director at (315) 735-3642. Visitors with special needs are encouraged to contact the historical society in advance. For those unable to attend this reunion, there are three other reunions planned. Contact Marty or visit his website www.cccstories.com for his schedule.

If anyone has information or pictures of relatives or friends who worked at one of the CCC camps, please contact Marty Podskoch at: 36 Waterhole Rd., Colchester, CT 06415 or 860-267-2442, or podskoch@comcast.net.

(Albany, NY – May 30, 2010) – Senator Joseph A. Griffo named Edna “Edie” Carbone of Boonville the 2010 Woman of Distinction for the 47th Senate District at the 13th Annual Senate Women of Distinction ceremony last Tuesday night in Albany, honoring their outstanding contributions in enriching the quality of life for their communities and beyond.

“We recognize women like Edie, that have made significant contributions to the neighbors near to her and to the wider region where we all interact,” said Senator Griffo. “Edie Carbone’s commitment to cancer survivors, and as an active fundraiser for many charities and causes in the region and as a part of one of the most successful small businesses in the area, compelled me to call attention to a woman who doesn’t look for, or seek the spotlight.”

Griffo continued, “I am pleased to once again sponsor the New York State Senate’s Women of Distinction program, which honors exceptional achievement, personal excellence and outstanding, courageous or heroic actions on the part of individual women.”

The Senate’s “Woman of Distinction” program was created in 1998 to honor New York women who exemplify personal excellence, or whose professional achievements or acts of courage, selflessness, integrity or perseverance serve as an example to all New Yorkers. Past honorees from the 47th Senatorial District include Joanne Dicob, Jeanne Donalty, Mary Chapin and Ruth Garner.

Griffo added, “From successful small-business family matriarch, to charity fundraiser, to a tireless advocate for cancer survivors, Edie sets an exemplary model for all New Yorkers, and I am extremely proud to honor her as a Woman of Distinction.”

Carbone was recognized during a reception at the Legislative Office Building last Tuesday night, along with other honorees from across the state.

(Utica, NY – May 14, 2010) –The Kelberman Center hosted its annual Walk for Autism on April 10 and 24 at sites across the Mohawk Valley. In total, the six walks raised more than $80,000, which will remain local and be used for various programs and services at the Kelberman Center including the Awesome Summer Days camp, Pool Pals, and the Social Skills groups for both adults and children.

The Walk for Autism took place in Oneida, Rome, Utica, New Hartford, Cooperstown, Holland Patent, and Boonville. Each walk featured entertainment, refreshments, activities, and prizes. The annual walks were once again a great success as family and friends enjoyed the morning with others walking for the same cause. “We Walk for One, We Walk for All” was the theme to represent the person that each community member knows who has autism and the one in 110 currently diagnosed.

Kelberman staff would like to thank Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, NYCM Insurance, Gremlin Medical Supply, Wal Mart, and the many other sponsors and hard-working committee members who were instrumental in making this year’s event such a success. For more information about autism or to make additional donations, contact the Kelberman Center at (315) 797-6241.

(Boonville, NY) The site of the Boonville Farmer’s Market is getting a face lift thanks to the generosity of Barrett Paving Materials of Boonville and the work of the Boonville Village DPW. Barrett Paving donated 100 tons of driveway mix that was trucked and applied at the site by the Village DPW.

Market Committee member, Kelly Ulrich stated, “Chip Schleicher, Barrett Plant Supervisor, was eager to assist in the Farmer’s Market project. Chip felt it was an excellent way for Barrett Paving to show their support of this community endeavor. We are very pleased with their overwhelming contribution to this community project.”

Judie Dellerba, Farmer’s Market Site Coordinator added, “Years of debris has been cleaned up from the site, and the cover of driveway mix has given us a safe, smooth service for not only for vendors, but also for market shoppers”

The Farmer’s Market is scheduled to open on Thursday, June 3. Ulrich also announced that they are offering one free booth space each week for local fund raising.

Ulrich indicated that each Thursday of the market, they will set aside one booth space to be used by any local church group, school group, club or non-political organization for their fund raising efforts.

Ulrich said, “This is a community event, and we know there are many groups out there that could benefit from having a presence at the Farmer’s Market. We are offering this space on a first come, first serve basis and plan to rotate each week, so all those that are interested have the opportunity to be there. We are waving any booth space fee in hopes that this will add to their fund raising efforts.” Ulrich went on to say, “There are other Farmer’s Markets that offer this to their communities and we feel it is a nice gesture to continue here. Some markets have seen groups have pie stands, sell ice cream cones, raffle tickets, home made bird houses, second hand books, just to name a few.”

The Boonville Farmer’s Market is scheduled to open on Thursday, June 3 and run every Thursday, from noon to 6 p.m., with the last market on Oct. 14. The market location is on Boonville Village property behind the Main Street Nice ‘n Easy.
