(Rome, NY) The Rome City School District will name the newly-renovated gymnasium at Strough Middle School in honor of Coach Stan “Buddy” Evans during a December 26 ceremony. The ceremony will immediately precede The Annual RFA Basketball Alumni Game.
Evans spent more than two decades coaching basketball teams at Rome Free Academy, his own alma mater. In addition, he coached baseball for the school district and was an active, visible figure in the Rome community. He is now an assistant coach for the LeMoyne men’s basketball team under his son, Steve Evans.
The dedication ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. December 26 at Strough Middle School. Doors will open at 5 p.m. Former athletes, coaching colleagues and local officials are expected to attend the event, which is free and open to the public.
Due to construction happening at Strough, spectators and game participants should enter the building through the school’s main entrance on Laurel Street. On-site staff will provide directions to the gym.
In addition, anyone interested in donating money for a dedication plaque can direct money to the Rome City School District, c/o Ann McGowan, 409 Bell Road, Rome, NY 13440. Contributions will be held in a special account set aside for this purpose. Questions about donations can be directed to the district’s business office, 338-6541.
